The program is usually conducted
over four, 2 hour sessions, with three half hour
follow-up telephone sessions.
An introduction to the concept of positive parenting.
Positive parenting is an approach to parenting that
aims to manage children’s behaviour in a constructive
and non-hurtful way. It is based on good communication
and positive attention to help children develop.
Encouraging appropriate behaviour increases the likelihood
of the behaviour being repeated. The strategies parents
learn can help encourage their child to behave appropriately
by enhancing a relationship with them, rewarding
them for desirable behaviour and teaching them new
skills.
Parents will be introduced to a number of strategies
that are useful in managing misbehaviour. These include – Calm
Instructions; Logical Consequences; Quiet Time and
Time Out: Ground Rules and Planned Ignoring.
High risk situations are times or settings in which
parents find it difficult to manage their child’s
behaviour. Parents will learn strategies through
planned activity routines to help prevent problems
in these situations.
These sessions are designed to provide ongoing support
for parents as they put into practice the strategies
introduced in the previous four sessions. These sessions
are tailored to meet individual family needs and
assist with any issues or concerns.
